Society Garlic (Tulbaghia violacea)

Fragrant, easy-care perennial with beautiful purple flowers and garlic-scented foliage.

Society Garlic is a charming, clump-forming perennial that produces long, grass-like green leaves and delicate clusters of lavender-pink to purple flowers on tall stems. Despite its name, it’s not true garlic — but the leaves release a mild garlic scent when crushed. It blooms profusely from spring through fall, adding cheerful color and movement to the garden.

  • Growth Habit: Neat, upright clumps — spreads slowly and stays well-behaved
  • Foliage & Blooms: Narrow, gray-green leaves; fragrant purple flower clusters
  • Seasonal Interest: Long blooming period (spring to fall); nearly evergreen in mild climates
  • Tough & Adaptable: Drought tolerant, deer resistant, rabbit resistant, and attracts butterflies

  • Border edges and pathways

  • Cutting gardens and pollinator gardens

Care: Full sun to partial shade. Plant in well-drained soil. Water regularly until established, then very drought tolerant. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms. Cut back in late winter.
