Mexican Bush Sage (Salvia leucantha) is a tough, heat-loving perennial with long, velvety purple flower spikes from late summer through fall. Hummingbirds, butterflies and bees love it, and deer tend to leave it alone. It grows about 3 to 4 feet tall and wide with soft, gray-green leaves. Plant in full sun in well-drained soil; once established it handles heat and dry spells well. Cut it back to the ground after frost or in late winter and it returns in spring. Hardy in USDA zones 8-10. Container grown in a 3-gallon pot and hand packed in central Louisiana.
