Sonic The Hedgehog (2020)

Parents need to know that Sonic the Hedgehog is a kid-targeted action/adventure movie starring the iconic Sega video game character. The famous blue hedgehog is also an alien with special powers that put him in danger in his world. While he's being pursued, his mama bird is shot with an arrow (she seems OK). For Sonic's safety, she pushes him through a portal to Earth with a warning that he must hide and stay on the run. Sonic never feels abandoned, but he is lonely. And the movie's messages, such as they are, revolve around the importance of companionship. Language is mostly mild ("hell"); it's more jokes about "butts" and "farts" than any actual swearing. One scene may raise eyebrows: Sonic and human hero Tom (James Marsden) stop at a roadside bar/restaurant where they get into a brawl (mostly punches), and Tom is seen drinking a beer and driving soon afterward, without incident. In general, the movie's violence is cartoonishly explosive, like an unrealistic video game: It's mostly drones shooting fireballs, lasers, and bullets. There are some moments of peril, but the audience is never in doubt that everyone will be OK -- even hysterically evil villain Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).

In SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, iconic Sega video game character Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) is on the run in rural Montana from Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey -- how you've been missed!). Robotnik wants to steal Sonic's supersonic speed powers to take over the world. With the help of local cop Tom "Donut Lord" Wachowski (James Marsden, who interacts with a CGI figure with ease and charm), Sonic takes off to evade his captor. Naturally, he gets into plenty of mischief along the way.

But as great as Carrey is, this is the story of Sonic, an animated alien hedgehog who's sent to Earth alone for his own safety. He's warned that if anyone sees him, they'll try to capture him for his special powers. So he settles in Green Hills, Montana, and watches those in the small town from the shadows with a wistfulness. Really, Sonic is like a little kid: He loves fart jokes, he can't keep quiet, he's (literally) bouncing off the walls, and he just wants a friend. It's a theme every kid can appreciate. Even if they don't relate to being alone, they can relate to being bored. As Tom, Marsden is a perfect companion to Sonic, popping off "dad jokes" and expressing his love for Olive Garden (the latter screams "product placement," but at least it's funny). The duo's evolving dynamic -- buddies, but really best friends, but really guardian and child, but really father and son -- make Sonic the Hedgehog a laugh-until-you-turn-blue fun film for the family to enjoy together.

Directed by Jeff Fowler, Sonic The Hedgehog is about classic Sega video game character, Sonic, (Ben Schwartz), teleporting to Earth, (via a bag of magical rings), to avoid a tribe of echidnas from abducting him for his supersonic speed power. Sonic then lives in secret for the next ten years in the town of Green Hills, Montana where he idolizes the local sheriff, Tom Wachowski, (James Marsden), and his veterinarian wife, Maddie, (Tika Sumpter), and wishes he could be a part of his family. Everything changes, though, when Sonic and Tom are forced to band together to prevent the evil Dr. Robotnik, (Jim Carrey), from capturing Sonic and using his powers for world domination. Typical good versus evil plot, right?

Sonic the Hedgehog is the titular main protagonist of the Paramount film series of the same name. He is an anthropomorphic hedgehog born on an alien planet called Mobius with the rare power to harness chaos energy giving him supersonic speed. He was forced to leave his home world from evil forces and build a life for himself on Earth, eventually becoming the planet's protector and guardian. He is the film's adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog from the video game franchise.

Sonic was born on an island on the alien planet Mobius where he spent his childhood living under the watchful eye of an anthropomorphic owl named Longclaw. He possessed the rare ability to harness chaos energy which gave him super speed, but also made him a target for those who selfishly wanted the power for themselves. One day, Sonic raced across his island home to bring Longclaw a flower, much to the owl's concern, as she feared he might have been followed. Sonic expressed confidence that he was moving too fast to be seen, but Longclaw notices that echidna tribesmen have surrounded her house and grabs the hedgehog as she takes flight in an attempt to escape.

Sonic soon awakens inside the Wachowski household and convinces Tom to help him stay hidden from his pursuers just as Robotnik arrives at the front door. Tom tries to hoax Robotnik into leaving as Sonic hides in the attic, but the doctor uses his airborne robot drones to scan the property, forcing the hedgehog to go downstairs to avoid detection. However, when Sonic discovers that Tom was in danger, he reveals himself to Robotnik to save Wachowski's life. Tom uses this distraction to knock Robotnik unconscious before Sonic stops a robot drone from shooting them by hopping into and destroying it.

Sonic, in order to save Tom and Maddie's lives, pushes them off the building before using his supersonic speed to take out Robotnik's drones and also save them. However, using one of Sonic's quills he obtained earlier back at Tom's house, Robotnik is able to enter supersonic speed himself and nearly ruin Sonic's rescue attempt. Sonic manages to get Tom and Maddie, transported by ring portal, and safely back to Green Hills, before dealing with Robotnik and the Prototype, having their chase pass through Paris, the Great Wall of China, and the Great Pyramids of Egypt, before Sonic attempts to escape back to Green Hills, but Robotnik manages to land a powerful hit just as Sonic is about to enter the portal, causing Sonic to be mortally wounded and left at Robotnik's mercy as they return to Green Hills.

He races to downtown Walla Walla where a group of armed men had broken into a bank to steal one of Dr. Robotnik's Control Gloves. Sonic asks a women named Linsey to assist him in stopping the criminals, but as he searched the bank vault for their boss, Linsey tasers him from behind since she is also one of the crooks. Sonic is locked inside the vault while Linsey contacts the person who hired her group to commit the robbery. She mentions her encounter with Sonic to her employer and is told that she will be payed extra if they can deliver the hedgehog to him in one piece. Linsey's associate Jason uses Robotnik's Control Glove to summon Badnik drones and have them lift the bank vault out of the building.

Sonic is a blue-furred, mobian hedgehog with gloves and brown boots when he was a little child. He later dawns two different shoes, one being green Velcro shoes and the other being white-ish laced shoes.

In the first film's teaser poster, Sonic had muscular limbs and an enormous head. His red shoes and laces and he had no gloves. His head was similar to an actual hedgehog's head, having dotted, bulging green eyes and a muzzle pointing out along his nose.

The other part of the film I really liked is Sonic. I was admittedly doubtful that the speedy hedgehog could ever be realized in a live-action movie, but after overhauling the design it works really well. Sonic looks just enough like his video game counterpart to satisfy longtime fans of the video games, while also looking like a living, breathing creature that found its way to Earth.

By the sequel, Robotnik's pursuit of Sonic has evolved from taking the latter's power to exacting revenge for his defeat. In the battle against the giant mech, Sonic realized and utilized the fact that Robotnik wanted to destroy him more than anything. Appearing before the hedgehog upon his return, the scientist vowed vengeance on Sonic, Tom, and Maddie (even sadistically including the Wachowskis' dog Ozzy to spite him), making good on that threat by attempting to kill them with his giant robot. No longer affiliated with the US government, Robotnik was unhesitant in attacking the G.U.N. squad led by his former superior Walters with his omnipotent powers. The intensified antagonism also extended to Tails, who he labeled as a weakness for Sonic, and Knuckles for their affiliation to Sonic that was similar to the Wachowskis and tried to kill them as well as they battled his robot.

Sonic is an extraterrestrial anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds. His caretaker, Longclaw the Owl, encourages him to hide his powers, but Sonic does not listen. The two are attacked by a tribe of echidnas; after one echidna fatally wounds Longclaw, she gives Sonic a bag of rings he can use to travel to other planets. Longclaw uses a ring to send Sonic to Earth before she is killed by the echidnas. On Earth, Sonic lives in secret in the town of Green Hills, Montana. He idolizes the local sheriff, Tom Wachowski, and his veterinarian wife Maddie. Tom has recently been hired by the San Francisco Police Department and is preparing to move.

Tom and Sonic manage to narrowly evade Robotnik on a number of occasions, and grow closer as they journey to San Francisco. Sonic disapproves of Tom's decision to leave Green Hills, arguing that he is leaving his true friends. Sonic is injured in an explosion shortly before the two arrive in San Francisco, where Tom is reunited with Maddie. Maddie helps revive Sonic, and the three travel to the building that Sonic dropped his rings on. Robotnik and his robots attack them at the top, but Sonic uses the rings to teleport Tom and Maddie back to Green Hills before taking on Robotnik. Using the power of Sonic's quill, Robotnik is able to achieve supersonic speed, and he and Sonic fight across the world. 041b061a72
